Former NFL offensive guard Tre’ Johnson has died at the age of 54, the Washington Commanders announced on Sunday.

“We’re heartbroken to learn of the loss of former Washington All-Pro guard Tre’ Johnson. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones,” the team wrote on X.

Johnson’s wife, Irene, said in a post to Facebook on Sunday that the football player died “suddenly and unexpectedly” on Sunday during a family trip. She said his family and friends are “devastated and in shock.”

Johnson played eight seasons from 1994 to 2001 as an offensive guard for the Washington Commanders, formally known as the Washington Redskins. He played another season with the Cleveland Browns in 2001.

He was a 1994 second-round draft pick and earned a Pro Bowl selection in 1999.

Irene Johnson said before his death, Tre’ worked as a history teacher at the Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland, “where he was beloved by the young male students he mentored and the faculty.”

She said the former football player was battling health issues recently that forced him to take a leave of absence.

“We will miss him so much,” she added.

Johnson leaves behind his wife, Irene, and four children: Chloe, EJ, EZ and Eden.
